Cataract Surgery Results

Cataract surgery results are reported from a study of over 40,000 patients.

What to Expect After Cataract Surgery

The probable cataract surgery result depends greatly upon the preoperative health of your eyes and your body.

The presence of co-pathology - other ocular or health problems in addition to cataracts - can significantly reduce the probability of the desired outcome. There is nearly a 21% difference in 20/20 outcomes between no pathology and co-pathology.

The table below is a general guide, however every patient is unique and may have higher or lower probabilities of the reported outcomes. Rely most on the opinion of a competent doctor after a comprehensive examination.

The "Big E" Snellen eye test is based upon the clarity a normally sighted person sees an object at 20 feet (6 meters) away. Snellen 20/20 means that the patient sees an object 20 feet away with the clarity a normally sighted person sees that same object 20 feet away. 20/40 means that the patient sees an object 20 feet away with the clarity a normally sighted person would see that same object at 40 feet away. 20/200 would be the clarity of an object 20 feet away that a normally sighted person would see the same object at 200 feet away.
