Cataracts mute and change color
perception as they progress, making blues and
purples appear black. |

Cataract Progression
As the natural crystalline lens slowly
changes from clear to cloudy from cataracts, it may also
acquire a yellow or brownish shade.
At first, the amount of tinting change
may be small and may not cause color vision problems. As the
cataract progresses, it may become more difficult to read
and perform other routine activities.
This gradual change in the amount of
lens color tinting does not necessarily affect the sharpness
of the image transmitted to the retina. Vision may be clear
and without haze, but colors have become muted and/or
distorted.
Cataract lens lens discoloration may
make it difficult or impossible to to identify blues and
purples. What appears to be a pair of black socks may
actually be purple.
